Free Visitor Guide

Waller County is one of the last great rural escapes in the Houston area. Just a short drive down Interstate 10 or US Hwy 290 will bring you through Waller County from Houston (download map) or request a full-sized four-color map.

Here you can visit a working farm complete with rides and attractions for all ages, tour a real winery, take a ride in vintage aircraft, watch a real county fair, get excited over a good old fashioned destruction derby, and step back in time to the civil war era. Seasonal Events

Mudfest

2014-06-28 - Starts at 10:00 AM at the Waller County Fairgrounds .Come out and get dirty. Mud events of all sorts including mud racing, wrestling, mudding, mud tug-a-war, car show and BBQ cook off.

Waller Freedom Festival

2014-07-03 - through July 4 .

Start things off July 3 with the Waller Freedom Festival Film and Art Show

July 4th the annual Freedom Fest is a city-wide celebration at no cost to the public.

Watermelon Festival

2014-07-19 - all day Saturday. .A long standing tradition in Hempstead. Come out and enjoy live bands, great cooking, and old-fashioned parade and some of the best watermelons this side of the Brazos river.

Take US Hwy 290 from Houston to Hempstead. Exit Hwy 6 and go south into town.

Sportsman's Extravaganza

2014-08-15 - Starts at 4:00PM KC Hall, Hempstead .An event for all hunters or fishermen. Great dinner, several raffle items, vendors, and a great opportunity to mix it up with other outdoorsmen.

Watermelon Run For The Fallen

2014-08-16 - Check event web site for times .

The purpose of this event is to remember each individual who gave his or her life serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Participants are asked to walk/run/roll a mile in memory of a fallen soldier that your knew or the soldier that will be assigned to you. Each participant will receive a shirt tag with the name of the military member for whom each individual will be walking/running/rolling for.


The event will begin at the Hempstead High School football field located at the intersection of 5th Street and Donoho Street, in Hempstead, Texas.

Waller County Fair

2014-09-28 - . - one of the oldest and most entertaining events in Waller County. Since 1945 the Waller County Fair has provided fun and entertainment for the entire family. Built around the ongoing livestock shows featuring local high school FFA programs and 4-H clubs, each evening holds live entertainment, great food and rodeo fun.

The fairgrounds are located on FM 359 just south of US Hwy 290 and old Hempstead Hwy about 1 mile on the left.

Liendo Plantation Tours

Step back in time to early Texas history. Built in 1853, the Liendo Plantation is one of Waller County's most popular historical site. Tours are available. To schedule, call 979-826-3126.

Katy Prairie

The Katy Prairie is an ecologically vital tallgrass prairie and associated wetlands area west of downtown Houston. Today, the Katy Prairie Conservancy, a nonprofit land trust, has protected nearly 20,000 acres that are home to more than 300 resident and migratory bird species; 110 species of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles; 400 species of wildflowers and grasses and thousands of terrestrial insects and aquatic invertebrate species. The prairie's wide open spaces support farming, ranching, ongoing educational programs, and a variety of outdoor activities such as bird watching, hiking and hunting ... all while providing significant flood mitigation and water quality benefits downstream.

Brookwood

A unique experience. You really need to come out and see one of Waller County's most visited attraction. It's much more than a gift shop, cafe and plant nursery. You just need to experience it for yourself. Located in Brookshire, about 40 miles west of Houston on Interstate 10.

Bomber Field RC Aircraft Park

Call before going out! Come out and see radio controlled model airplanes rule the sky over Waller County. Spectator fee is $7.00 with free parking. Children 12 and under are free. Hamburgers, cold drinks, and souviners available.

The field is located in Monaville just north of Brookshire on FM 359. Go 2 miles East of Monaville on FM 1887 off of FM 359 and you will see the field on the left. Come see the B-17s fly in formation.

Soaring Club of Houston

Come out and enjoy gliders soaring around the beautiful countryside. Rides and training are also available. The club is a member of the Soaring Society of America (SSA).
